I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts recently -- the See Hear Speak podcast with Tiffany Hogan; the episode was about morphology and morphological awareness with Julie Wolter as the guest.
As you may know from reading some of my previous posts, I love working on increasing morphological awareness in my students. And for those SLPs who "can't work on spelling" in their settings, morphological awareness can be a great workaround: you're linking meaning with orthographic patterns in words. Increasing students' morphological awareness can boost their phonological awareness, reading comprehension, vocabulary, decoding, and spelling. It's so powerful!
In the podcast, Wolter referred to an article she wrote with Ginger Collins, called, Morphological Awareness Intervention for Students Who Struggle with Language and Literacy. In this article, Wolter and Collins provided a goal for increasing morphological awareness, which is aligned with Common Core State Standards, and is written as follows:
"When reading aloud from an instructional textbook, the student will improve word reading and determine the meaning of targeted grade-level academic English words by identifying their roots and affixes and explaining their meanings with 80% accuracy across two of three sessions."
Don't you love it when you can get IEP goals directly from the research?
Below, I've gathered four free tools to help you work on increasing morphological awareness with your students.
Morphological Awareness Activity 1:
Here's a free spinner game where students can spin the wheels to form words with Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Get it on the free downloads page. It's called Morphology Game 3, and you can download the Morphology Game Word Sheet to use with it.
Morphological Awareness Activity 2:
This is another free spinner game where students can spin the wheels to form words with Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Get it on the free downloads page. It's called Morphology Game 4, and you can download the Morphology Game Word Sheet to use with it.
Morphological Awareness Activity 3:
Here's yet another free spinner game where students can learn the meanings of Greek roots. Get it on the free downloads page. It's called Morphology Game Greek Roots Definitions.
Morphological Awareness Activity 4:
Check out this amazing free website. It has so many cool tools you and your students can play around with when you're working on morphological awareness.
I like the Word Searcher function, where you can type in a root, and it will spit out all the words that have that root in it. For example, it gives me 138 words with the root "form" in it!
There's also the mini-matrix maker where you can create matrices for a root and all the prefixes and suffixes you can add to it. I seriously want to decorate my office with these matrices!
Can't get enough morphological awareness info?
